Making a Steel Knot Metal Handle - Industrial Style Handle - MIG Welding Project

In this video, I make a Steel Knot Metal Handle which is an Industrial Style Metal Handle, bending rebar to make the knot. I love the look of industrial furniture and all the decor that comes with it, and this rebar handle has the look I like. I hope you enjoy my video of the project, it was a lot of fun to make.

Main tools used, a MIG welder, angle grinder, drill, and a bench vise.

Always use all the correct safety gear, and use your tools safely, I am not a good role model for this.

The Rebar in the handle is 7mm, the wide flat bar is 50mm wide, 250mm long and 3mm thick, the smaller flat bar is 32mm wide, 207mm long and 6mm thick, the bolts are 25mm across the head and 50mm long, the shaft of the bolt is 16mm.

Hope you found something of use in my video or at least found it entertaining. Thank you.

Note: When you bend metal/rebar, you naturally weaken it. Bending it cold will normally cause fine cracks, and it may even break if you put enough strain on the rebar or bend it in the same place too many times. Do not rely on cold-bent steel/rebar to support a load.

The on I am using has taken quite a beating over the years, so I have my fingers crossed I will never be doing a "This is how you repair a broken vice" video. thank you for your comment.

Amazing!!! Tap the other end of the bolts so you can use a bolt to attach instead of a metal plate

Gavin Clark the man! I rarely watch a DIY video as long as this, but it kept my attention till the end. Good job making the vid, and the handle too. Now, tell us how long it will take the average guy with the tools to make the handle you just made.

      1. Gavin Clark

Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I have no idea how long it would take someone else to make this, get a quote from someone and you will get an idea. If I was to make another one now that I have one to measure off it would be quicker, especially if I am not filming it. If I was to make 10 more then the time taken on each one would be much less than making 10 individual ones, as you would cut all the steel, drill all the holes and only have to put the drill bit into the drill once for the whole 10 bits, and before having sizes etc, before you get to your forth knot you would have got much faster than the first etc. Hope that helps you a bit.

I have decided not to comment on finishes, as there are so many answers and questions. As what climate you are in, is it inside-outside, lots of rain, ice, do you want long term and rarely touch, or a wax with a wipe over every year. That is why I have no opinion, Please ask someone in your area what you should use, I feel this is a better way to find out. Thank you for your comment.

      title should be. "rebar handle".

      1. Gavin Clark

I have a few other rebar handle videos up, and as this has a knot in it I went with the title on it leaving the rebar out, but it is in the tags and description, so it can be searched. Thank you for your comment.

Brilliant, I know an awesome way to finish that. Put it outside and spray it with a mixture of acid and water and let it rust up nice and even. then brush with some steel wool to your liking to give character. Then paint on a product called Penitrol by Flood paint solutions, its an oil based paint additive to eliminate brush strokes. It will immediately take the lightly colored rust and turn it a nice dark brown like leather. let dry completely and then brush on 2 or 3 coats of a Satin polyurethane and your done and it will look beautiful and warm leather color. Take it next level, after first coat of poly, spray some black on it and then wipe off leaving only the cracks and crevices colored black , experiment until you get desired antiqued look, then finish with more poly.

      1. Gavin Clark

Thank you very much, I have used, The Flood Company Penetrol, many times in the past an awesome product for rust. I have just used it on rebar and put a clear over it (video will be up in a week or so) I love your idea to finish that handle, I have used thinners based wood stain to give metal the old look, and then coat it in clear, I have used your black idea on timber I had damaged etc to give it the old barn look, and sanded it off the timber leaving the black in all the damaged bits, then stain it and coat in clear. but never on metal, I thank you for your information and I will have a play at some stage to see how I go.

        @Gavin Clark ok thank you

      2. Gavin Clark

Here is the measurements in metric, just convert them in google as you know the steel sizes in inches you can buy there, you will round up or down to match what is available to you. Hope that helps

Awesome, though how do you work a with a metric and imperial tape. I am a 30 year carpenter and those measures mess me up.

      1. Gavin Clark

I grew up when metric came in and so learnt both, and still when I see 50mm I just think 2 inches, and I order timber asking for 2 metres of 4 by 2 inches. We still have both measurements and blends of both on many things, eg our car wheels are still in inches in Australia 16, 17, 18 inches. Funny when you think about it. Thank you for your comment.
